Les cavités ont pu servir d'habitats troglodytiques à l'époque préhistorique avant d'être retaillées et utilisées comme chambres funéraires aux périodes gréco-romaine puis paléochrétienne. Dans les années soixante, les hippies se sont installés dans les cavités. Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell (qui ecrivit Carey en souvenir de son passage à Matala - Musique de fond) et bien d'autres ont utilisé pendant quelques temps les lieux.

In the sixties, hippies settled down in cavities. Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell (which wrote Carey remembering her time passed in Matala - Back ground musik) and many others used for a while places.
