ARKADI

 

Le monastère d’Arkadi est un monastère orthodoxe situé sur un plateau fertile au sud-est de Rethymnon.L'église à deux nefs fut détruite par les Turcs en 1866, et reconstruite. Arkadi fut un centre actif et un des hauts lieux de la résistance contre l'occupation ottomane, ce qui fit sa célébrité. Pendant la révolte crétoise de 1866, 943 Grecs y trouvèrent refuge : des résistants, et une majorité de femmes et d'enfants. Après trois jours de combat, et sur les ordres du supérieur du monastère, l'higoumène Gabriel, les Crétois firent sauter les barils de poudre, préférant se sacrifier plutôt que de se rendre. Le monastère est devenu aujourd'hui un sanctuaire national en l'honneur de la résistance crétoise.

 

The monastery of Arkadi is an orthodox monastery situated on a fertile tray in the southeast of Rethymnon. The church in two naves was destroyed by the Turks in 1866, and reconstructed. Arkadi was an active center and one of the high places of the resistance against the Ottoman occupation, what made its celebrity. During the Cretan revolt of 1866, 943 Greeks found refuge there: Resistance fighters, and majority of women and children. After three days of fight, and on the orders of the superior of the monastery, the higoumène Gabriel, the Cretans blew up powder kegs, preferring to sacrifice rather than to surrender. The monastery became a national sanctuary in honor of the Cretan resistance today.
